Minecraft is a great game where you can mine different ressource blocks and then place blocks to build anything you can imagine.
In singleplayer, at night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens.
In multiplayer games the gametype vary from server to server. You can find anything from deep roleplaying servers to hardcore PvP. Normally people vary about 2 different playstyles: Classic Minecraft where you can build freely and then SMP (Survival Multiplayer).
All servers are maintained by private people at most. If you want to find different servers, try look at Minecraft Server List.
